Our spider

Our spider

I took some more pictures of our spider but I haven’t had a chance to post them yet.  Others and Frank Starmer helped us identify the spider as an Argiope aurantia.  He is commonly referred to as a “Golden Orb”.  There are some really good pictures at this site of the spider in various stages.

My 3.5 year old son actually spotted the male spider last night and he is a fraction of the size of the female.  When we got home yesterday, the female had 1 giant beetle in her web and 2 smaller bugs that had been wrapped up and looked like small flies.  She was eating the large beetle when we got home and we got to watch her eat the beetle completely and then throw it off of her web!

And, if you really want to read up more on this very cool spider, Rose Paul found a site on wikipedia as well.
